Salaula: The World of Secondhand Clothing and Zambia
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (August, 2000)
Author: Karen Tranberg Hansen
Average review score:

Consumers as active participants
The author, an anthropologist, explores the phenomenon of second-hand clothes being exported from the West into Zambia, where they are sold on as "luxury goods". She argues against the idea that this is a North-South neo-colonial or aid transaction, asserting that Zambians are not just passive recipients of recycled clothes, but active consumers making informed (or at least broadly understood) cultural choices. She also explores how clothes, as cultural signifiers, give the wearer meaning in the specific Zambian social context. She also identifies reasons why people choose salaula and its impact on culture and "modernization" in Zambia Hansen explains the whole commodity chain of procurement, distribution and consumption of second-hand clothes. The reader may be surprised to learn that clothes given away to charities may be sold to exporters for resale in developing countries at all.

Sams Teach Yourself ASP.NET in 24 Hours Complete Starter Kit
Published in Paperback by SAMS (28 May, 2003)
Author: Scott Mitchell
Average review score:

A Fantastic Learning Resource
I give this book by Scott Mitchell FIVE STARS! After tediously working my way through more than half a dozen other ASP.NET books in order to learn this new technology, this is the first one that made sense using examples that were not only easy to understand, but useful for future applications as well. I ran into configuration problems half way through the book, and Scott (the author) was quick to email me with solutions the same day! Just how much more can a student expect? Scott has a way of explaining complicated concepts in a way that someone studying this topic for the first time can understand, and he uses just enough repetition to reinforce a topic thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the basics of ASP.NET.

Savvy Online Shopping: Your Guide to Getting the Best Products--At the Best Prices --On Line!
Published in Paperback by Microsoft Press (27 September, 2000)
Author: Jill T. Freeze
Average review score:

Informative and entertaining introduction to shopping online
Jill Freeze does an outstanding job in explaining the world of shopping online to people who might want to try it, but is concerned about privacy and safety. This is the perfect book to read if you've wanted to try online shopping, but need more information first.

Jill's style is entertaining and the book is quick-moving. You won't realize how much information you've accumulated while enjoying reading about the ins and outs of shopping online!

I highly recommend this book for newbies to shopping online. Jill explains everything clearly step-by-step. She also includes how to shop at Ebay and other online auctions. Most newbies would prefer to start their online shopping experience with something a bit easier, like buying this book at Amazon, for example, but everything you need to jump into the Ebay auction world is there if you decide to do that!

The book discusses how to look at the "big ticket items" online as well - things like houses and cars and colleges! You can do research online even if you end up buying the product at the local mall.

Jill Freeze is visually impaired and she is a perfect example of how online shopping makes life easier for SO many people in SO many different situations. I have been shopping online for a few years now, and have bought stuff from lots of e-tailers, including Amazon (yes, it was the first, and my favorite!), Webvan, Ebay, Half.com, Lands End, Drugstore.com, and many others. There's very little that you can't buy online, actually!

Jill discusses how to research the item you're looking to buy - she gives you lots of websites to check, but I found that she left out a few of my favorites:

BizRate.com - gives detailed reports on the different online stores - comparing on-time delivery, easy navigation of the website, prices, quality of items sold, etc. Yes, Amazon is very highly rated on Bizrate.com!

DealOfDay.com - looking for a deal? Check out what special offers are available at the online store of your choice ($10 off a $50 purchase, for example!)

BestBookBuys.com - My favorite thing to shop for online (and off-line, for that matter!) is books, and this website is the best for finding which store has your book at what price. You type in the title, author, or ISBN number, and it looks at about 30 different bookstores online and comes up with an easy-to-understand chart giving you the price (lowest price first), shipping cost, tax in what states, and best of all - AVAILABILITY of your book! Many shopping bots leave out this important fact. You can see the bottom line price - including shipping, and how soon your book will get to you. If you find that Amazon is your best bet for your latest must-have book (and it often is, all things considered), just click on "Buy" and BestBookBuys.com will take you right to the book detail page on Amazon (or whatever other e-tailer you click on) and there you are! Before buying from a bookstore that you aren't familiar with, check it out at Bizrate first.

Thanks, Jill, for a complete guide to the wonderful world of shopping online!

One useful book
The Seattle Super Shopper is a great book. The amount of stores that Vicki Koeplin went to and discussed is enormous. Plus all the information wriiten about each is sure to help you find exactly what you are looking for, and find it discounted, too. The time she spent on the book is probably way too many to count. I recommend this to anyone interested about shopping and finding great deals too

Service Provider Strategy: Proven Secrets for xSPs
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (21 August, 2001)
Author: Anne M. Burris
Average review score:

Insightful view on working with Serivce Providers
Having worked as a consultant for one of the main firms, I have worked on many Service provider assignments. Usually they involve either planing for the startup of a new provider or starting new services within an existing one. One reading this book I found it very true to life and it provides excellent checklists both as reminder to the experienced and also to aid the novices in what needs to be done. The case studies show alot of the thought processes these providers go through and I would highly recommend this book for anyone working in a Service Provider or anyone thinking of starting one up.

Set Up Your Home Office in a Weekend (In a Weekend)
Published in Paperback by Premier Press (September, 2000)

Manage the Nitty-Gritty Details of Setting Up a Home Office
Let me start out by saying that I'm the author of this book, so my comments may be somewhat biased... :)

I'm the author of over 50 books on computer hardware and software, and I run a home-based business called Your Computer Friend that specializes in PC training and troubleshooting for residential customers. I wrote this book to compile all the lessons I learned the hard way when setting up my own home office and freelance business 6 years ago. Sure, everything's running smoothly NOW, but back then I wish someone had been there to help me choose office furniture, buy a fax machine and a PC, set up an accounting system, decide whether to take credit cards, and hold my hand through that first agonizing Schedule C tax form.

This is a book about setting up a home office, from a very practical standpoint. You'll learn how to evaluate desks and chairs, how to estimate your computer equipment needs, what kind of window treatments are best for various purposes, and how to find out whether your neighborhood is zoned for home business use. But there is also substantial coverage of the everyday practicalities involved in setting up the "thinking" side of the business, like what tax forms you'll need, what your accounting and incorporation options are, what kind of equipment is necessary to take credit cards, and dozens of other little details that might not have even occurred to you. I also present some of the tips and tricks that have worked for me for staying motivated, getting repeat business, and derailing distractions while being at home all day.
